Group & Merge PDF and Image Files by Name Online for Free

ToolPlex's Group & Merge tool lets you upload multiple PDF and image files at once and automatically groups them by their base filename — the part before the extension. All files in the same group are merged together into a single A4 PDF. Your files never leave your device — all processing happens locally using pdf-lib and PDF.js.

Perfect for organising scanned documents, invoice batches, survey photo sets and any workflow where multiple file parts share a common name.

How Does Name-Based Grouping Work?

Files are grouped by their base name — the part before the extension. For example, invoice_jan.pdf, invoice_jan.jpg and invoice_jan_2.png all share the same base name invoice_jan and will be merged into one PDF called invoice_jan_toolplex.pdf. Grouping is case-insensitive and strips trailing duplicate-copy suffixes like (1) or (2).

Why Use ToolPlex Group & Merge?

Unlike other online tools that upload your files to a server, ToolPlex processes everything inside your browser. There is no file transfer, no storage risk, and no size limits imposed by a remote API. The tool handles mixed formats — PDFs and images freely combined — and scales every page to A4, preserving original orientation and aspect ratio for clean, professional output.

Explore Our Other Tools

There are several tools available on our Tool Website which are useful for every category of professional — Businessman, Finance Professional, Surveyor or Student.

If you need to merge PDFs without grouping, use our Merge PDF tool — it combines files in any order into one document. To split a PDF into individual pages or ranges, try Split PDF. If you want to remove a specific page from a PDF, the Remove PDF Page tool does exactly that.

Before merging, you may want to compress large files first — use PDF Compressor or Image Compressor to reduce file sizes. To convert images to PDF before grouping, use our Image to PDF converter. For the reverse, PDF to Image extracts every page as a JPG or PNG. For annotating photos before merging, the Image Editor and Date Stamper tools are especially useful for surveyors and field professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are files grouped together?
Files are grouped by their base filename — the part before the file extension. For example, invoice.pdf and invoice.jpg are both named invoice and will be merged into one PDF called invoice_toolplex.pdf. Grouping is case-insensitive and strips trailing duplicate suffixes like (1) or (2).
What file formats are supported?
You can upload PDF files and common image formats: JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP and TIFF. All image formats are automatically converted to A4 PDF pages during merging, with orientation and aspect ratio preserved.
Is there a limit on the number of files?
No. There is no hard limit. The tool processes everything in your browser. Very large batches may take longer depending on your device speed and available memory.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and PDF.js. Your files never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy — even if you go offline after the page loads.
What order are pages merged in?
Within each group, files are merged in the order they appear in the list. You can drag the handle on the left of any file row to reorder it within its group, or even drag it into a different group entirely.
What is downloaded — a PDF or a ZIP?
If you have only one group, a single PDF is downloaded directly — no ZIP needed. If you have two or more groups, all merged PDFs are bundled into one ZIP file named after the first group, e.g. invoice_toolplex.zip.
Can I reorder files within a group before merging?
Yes. Use the drag handle (⠿) on the left of each file row to reorder files within a group or move a file to a different group. The order shown is the exact page order in the merged PDF.
What does the _toolplex suffix mean in the filename?
The _toolplex suffix is automatically added to the output filename to distinguish it from your original files. For example, a group named Report produces Report_toolplex.pdf as the output.
